Basketball Recap: Rock Academy Comes Up Short

If Rock Academy was feeling good fresh off their 73-47 takedown of Orange Glen last Monday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Rock Academy Warriors fell just short of the Vincent Memorial Scots by a score of 62-60 on Tuesday. While losing is never fun, the Warriors can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1306th, while the Scots are ranked 541st).

Despite the loss, Rock Academy still got an impressive performance from James Whitley, who dropped a double-double with 30 points and ten boards. Whitley's evening made it four games in a row in which he has scored at least 16 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Quentin Uhland, who went 6 for 12 en route to 14 points along with six rebounds and six steals.

Even though they lost, Rock Academy was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.1 assists per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 9.6.

Vincent Memorial's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was JoseCarlos Acosta, who dropped a double-double with 30 points and 17 boards. That makes it 11 consecutive games in which Acosta has scored at least a third of Vincent Memorial's points. Manuel Montano also deserves some recognition as he posted his first assist of the season.

Rock Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 1-21. As for Vincent Memorial, they have been performing well recently as they've won eight of their last ten matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 11-7 record this season.

Rock Academy has already played their next contest, a 50-48 loss against San Diego Jewish Academy on the 6th. As for Vincent Memorial, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 65-62 defeat against Calexico on the 6th.
