McMinn Central and Copper Basin are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2016, but likely not for long. The Chargers will venture away from home to take on the Cougars at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. McMinn Central is coming into the match hot, having won their last four games.
On Monday, McMinn Central needed a bit of extra time to put away Tellico Plains. They came out on top against the Bears by a score of 9-6. That's two games straight that the Chargers have won by exactly three runs.
Lauren Peterson spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered six earned runs on seven hits and racked up 12 Ks. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Riley Thompson, who scored three runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Brooke Martin, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Thompson wasn't the only one making solid contact: McMinn Central kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least ten hits in four consecutive games.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Copper Basin took on Polk County on Monday. The Cougars walked away with a 5-1 victory over the Wildcats. The Cougars haven't had any issues with the Wildcats recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.
Copper Basin also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Caitlin Pack gave up only one earned run on six hits.
At the plate, Kinsley Ross was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double. That stolen base marked the first that she snagged this season. Another player making a difference was Claire Ledford, who scored a run while going 1-for-4.
Copper Basin now has a winning record of 5-4. As for McMinn Central, their record is now 10-6.
McMinn Central came out on top in a nail-biter against Copper Basin in their previous matchup back in March, sneaking past 8-7. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Chargers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
