Playing their home contests in the city that was once the largest steel mill in the United States, Sparrows Point is one of only 10 girls soccer programs being honored on this year's Tour of Champions. The TOC also honored Lori Sexton's program in 2015.
Staff Sergeant Terrence Tyler of the Maryland Army National Guard and MaxPreps representative Armand Milanesi were on hand to present the prestigious Army National Guard national ranking trophy to head coach Lori Sexton and the girls soccer team in front of family, friends, the city council and delegates.
Sparrows Point principal Emily J. Caster introduced the guest speakers. Then, following all of the congratulatory messages, Milanesi talked about the team's on-field accomplishments, highlighting a season that included 13 shutouts and a 17-0 record. Milanesi also informed the crowd that Sparrows Point outscored its opposition 68-7 and touched on the school's 4-2 victory over Smithsburg in the state championship contest, its No. 1 ranking in the state of
Maryland and the No. 10 national ranking!
Milanesi introduced SSG Tyler, who talked briefly about teamwork, leadership and dedication, shared character traits of the Army National Guard and a state championship soccer team. SSG Tyler then presented Sexton with Sparrow Point's second girls soccer Army National Guard national ranking trophy and a nationally ranked rafter banner. Sexton thanked those in attendance for all of their support and congratulated her players on their accomplishments. Following the ceremony, the TOC took pictures of the Pointers and their new hardware. Congratulations Pointers!
