The Sunnyside Wildcats had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 22.3 points), and they went ahead and made it four on Monday. They walked away with a 63-54 victory over McLane. Given Sunnyside's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 245th, while the Highlanders are ranked 585th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Sunnyside's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cj Jones, who scored 16 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Tanner Wilson, who scored 15 points.
Despite the loss, McLane still got an impressive performance from Cedric Hughes, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 16 rebounds. Hughes has been hot recently, having posted nine or more rebounds the last nine times he's played. Another player making a difference was Da?Zir Newhouse, who scored seven points along with three steals.
Sunnyside's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 18-5. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 67.5 points per game. As for McLane, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 13-11 record this season.
Sunnyside will head out on the road to take on the Warriors at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for McLane, they will be playing at home against the Hornets at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Hopefully Sanger West focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 22 on Monday.
