Basketball Recap: Middletown Comes Up Short

After flying high against Mt. Healthy last Monday, Middletown came back down to earth. The Middletown Middies fell just short of the Fairfield Indians by a score of 42-40 on Wednesday. The Middies were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Indians apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

When it comes to explaining why Middletown lost, don't look at Leila Johnson. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 15 points and 14 boards. The dominant performance also gave Johnson a new career-high in steals (seven). Jamia Jones was another key player, putting up eight points along with 12 rebounds and four blocks.

Even though they lost, Middletown smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've managed all season.

Middletown has been struggling recently as they've lost eight of their last nine matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-12 record this season. As for Fairfield, their victory ended a 14-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 4-15.

Middletown and Fairfield could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Ohio Rankings. Middletown (ranked 348th) will meet Mason (ranked sixth) at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday. Meanwhile, Fairfield will face off against Lakota East at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday down 322 places (381 vs. 59).
