Mt. Blue had lost four straight at home dating back to last season, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 1-1 to make it five. They took an 8-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Brunswick Dragons. The Cougars were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Dragons apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.
Nolan Leso put in work no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits (and only one walk). Leso was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Dane Cousineau and Thomas Cormier stepped up to the plate in a big way. Cousineau went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run, while Cormier got on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.
As for Brunswick, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 3-1. That's two games straight that they have won by exactly four runs.
Like Mt. Blue, Brunswick also got a great game from a two-way player: Lism Scholl. On the mound, he struck out 11 batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off one hit. With that strong performance, Scholl is now averaging an impressive 5.8 strikeouts per game. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. He also brought in an RBI, marking his first of the season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Henry Blood, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. He also put up a double, which was his first of the season.
We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. Mt. Blue will take on rival Messalonskee at 4:15 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Brunswick is set to challenge their familiar foe Camden Hills at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
