The Dawson School Mustangs's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their third straight loss. They lost to Belleview Christian at home by a decisive 62-46 margin. While losing is never fun, Dawson School can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 216th, while Belleview Christian is ranked 58th).
When it comes to explaining why Dawson School lost, one person who can't be blamed is Peter Ernst. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 21 points and 20 rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Ernst has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Jackson Parker, who scored ten points along with two steals.
Even though they lost, Dawson School smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Belleview Christian only pulled down two offensive rebounds.
Belleview Christian's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Brandon Ewing, who scored 23 points along with six rebounds and four steals. Ewing is absolutely dominating the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Garrett Owen, who scored 18 points.
Dawson School has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost five of their last six contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-6 record this season. As for Belleview Christian, they pushed their record up to 12-1 with that win, which was their 14th straight on the road.
Dawson School won't have much time to rest: their next game is against SkyView Academy at 7:30 p.m. on January 19th. SkyView Academy knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past seven matches -- so hopefully Dawson School likes a good challenge. As for Belleview Christian, they will be playing at home against Lone Star at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
