Basketball Game Preview: Mayer Wildcats vs. Mogollon Mustangs

Mayer hasn't had much luck against Mogollon recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. After both having extra time off, both will shake off the cobwebs and face off against one another at 5:30 p.m.

It was a proper cat-fight when Mayer faced off against Chino Valley last Saturday. Mayer lost 52-30 to Chino Valley.

Mayer's defeat came about despite a quality game from Fatima Morales, who went 5 of 10 on her way to 11 points. That's the most points Morales has posted since back in January of 2024.

Even though they lost, Mayer smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in seven consecutive matches.

Meanwhile, Mogollon entered their tilt with San Simon back in December of 2024 with three consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with four. They claimed a resounding 53-18 victory over the Longhorns. The Mustangs have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won ten games by 23 points or more this season.

Mogollon's win came from a few key players Mayer will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Heidi Parry, who posted nine points in addition to six boards and five steals. She has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 14 times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Kindsey Porter, who had seven points and six assists.

Mayer's loss dropped their record down to 6-8. As for Mogollon, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 11-3 record this season.

Mayer took a serious blow against Mogollon when the teams last played back in November of 2024, falling 72-9. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Parry, who made all 7 shots she took to post 18 points along with five rebounds and five steals.
