Temple (Texas) had its advantage, which at one point stood at 13 points, drop to six before the final whistle blew on a 50-44 victory over
Belton (Texas).
After taking the lead on a touchdown pass by
Peter Shelburne to
Durham Smythe, the Tigers went into halftime with a 24-21 lead. The Wildcats took the lead for good with a touchdown run by
Chad President in the third quarter.
Temple's
Zachary Allen scored three touchdowns on the ground in the victory.
Belton's
Brandon Rhoads played well. The sophomore running back ran for three touchdowns. He has now scored seven touchdowns on the season.
THS's most effective player was Allen. He threw two touchdowns.
BHS came in allowing just 13.0 points per game this season.
Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 23-8 win for the Wildcats.
The loss comes after Belton defeated Ellison 35-16 last week. The win was a nice bounce back for Temple, which lost to Midway last week, 69-20.
Temple (4-2) will play a 5A Region I District 8 game against Ellison next week, while Belton (4-2) will take on Copperas Cove also in a 5A Region I District 8 game.
