Coastal Academy hasn't had much luck against Escondido Charter recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Stingrays will head out to square off against the Tigers at 4:00 p.m. Coastal Academy is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.5 runs per game this season.
On Wednesday, Coastal Academy beat San Dieguito Academy 7-3.
Therese Frazer spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on six hits.
On the hitting side, Cayla Contreras was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.
Tri-City Christian typically has all the answers at home, but two weeks ago Escondido Charter proved too difficult a challenge. They walked away with a 5-1 victory over the Eagles. The Tigers haven't had any issues with the Eagles recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive win against them.
Escondido Charter also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Lilly Harper gave up a run (which was unearned) on four hits and racked up nine Ks. Harper has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in nine consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Rose Gomez, who went 1-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. Another player making a difference was Selena Salas, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one run.
Coastal Academy has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Escondido Charter, they pushed their record up to 16-3 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road.
Friday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Coastal Academy has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .436. However, it's not like Escondido Charter struggles in that department as they've averaged .432. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Coastal Academy suffered a grim 15-9 defeat to Escondido Charter when the teams last played back in March. Can the Stingrays avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
