Basketball Recap: Union Comes Up Short

Union was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss dating back to last season. They were beaten by the Douglas Byrd Eagles 66-25. The Spartans were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 35-9.

Several Spartans players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was AHLEEYAH RICHARDSON, who posted five points along with eight rebounds and three blocks. RICHARDSON is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of TIJAYA GOODMAN, who put up four points and nine rebounds.

Douglas Byrd's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jazmine Burns, who dropped a triple-double on 19 points, 13 rebounds, and 12 steals. That's the most boards Burns has posted since back in November of 2023. Sheryraye Johnson was another key player, going 7 of 15 on her way to 16 points along with eight rebounds and five steals.

Union's defeat dropped their record down to 0-4. As for Douglas Byrd, with the victory, they broke their six-game losing streak and moved their record to 1-1.

Union wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 65-33 loss against South Brunswick on the 3rd. As for Douglas Byrd, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 51-29 win against Harnett Central on the 3rd.
