After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Buena Vista, the Manitou Springs Mustangs were happy to have found some success on Friday. They were the clear victor by a 40-19 margin over Rye. That's another feather in the cap for Manitou Springs, who also won these teams' last head-to-head.
Leading Manitou Springs to victory were Brooklynn Sheffield and Tori Greene. Sheffield almost dropped a double-double on 11 points and nine rebounds, while Greene scored 12 points along with five steals. Sheffield hasn't dropped below nine rebounds for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Cassidy Blechman, who scored five points along with seven rebounds and five assists.
Despite the loss, Rye had strong showings from Abrianna Chianelli, who scored three points along with five steals, and Taci Ehrlich, who scored two points along with seven rebounds.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Rye struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Manitou Springs posted 11 assists.
Manitou Springs' victory ended a five-game drought on the road and puts them at 7-12. As for Rye, they dropped their record down to 3-14 with that loss, which was their tenth straight at home.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Manitou Springs is on the road again on Tuesday and plays Alamosa at 6:00 p.m. on February 13th. As for Rye, they will take on Peyton at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Peyton will roll in looking for their 17th straight victory, something Rye surely won't give up without a fight.
