The Monterey Trail Mustangs will face off against the Kennedy Cougars at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The last three games Monterey Trail has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
On Monday, Monterey Trail sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-2 victory over McClatchy. The Mustangs haven't had any issues with the Lions recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.
Maya Ewing was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Ewing was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Liliana Ruelas, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April of 2024.
Meanwhile, Kennedy waltzed into their game on Monday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They put the hurt on the Raiders with a sharp 13-3 victory. The result was nothing new for the Cougars, who have now won three matches by six runs or more so far this season.
Like Monterey Trail, Kennedy also got a great game from a two-way player: Kaylena Ogle. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. Ogle has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three RBI.
In other batting news, Kennedy let Kira Griffin and Malaiyah Fujinaga?starks run wild. Griffin scored three runs and stole Three bases. while going 2-for-3, while Fujinaga?starks scored two runs and stole Five bases. while going 2-for-3. Griffin continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was London Deguchy, who scored two runs and stole Three bases. while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
Kennedy was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .407. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .360 or higher in three consecutive contests.
Monterey Trail's win bumped their record up to 2-3. As for Kennedy, they now have a winning record of 4-3.
Monterey Trail came out on top in a nail-biter against Kennedy when the teams last played back in April of 2024, sneaking past 4-2. Will Monterey Trail repeat their success, or does Kennedy have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
