There wasn't a ton of movement in the power rankings this week, but there was certainly enough to keep things interesting. There's a new number one at the head of the rankings as well as a new caboose.
Can't Touch This
Hope Christian's 45 - 2 win over Los Alamos last week had a lot to do with the leadership of senior Vince Quezada. Quezada rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns. In fact, our algorithms singled out Quezada as one of the top players in the power rankings for the week.
This Week's Big Showdown
One of last week's main attractions was the confrontation between Hobbs and Las Cruces, 5th and 10th in the power rankings, respectively. Hobbs scooted by Las Cruces with a score of 36 - 21. The Las Cruces defense has struggled this season (giving up an average of 34 points per game), and Hobbs took advantage of that.
No Stoppin 'Em
It isn't too difficult to come out on top when you enjoy a 123-yard edge over your opponent, and Artesia had just that last week. It took its contest against Lovington by a conclusive 50 - 21 score. No one had a larger role in the success than junior Clay Houghtaling, who brought his A game into the contest. He threw for 215 yards and three touchdowns. At 71 total points, this was the highest scoring power ranking game of the week.
Next Week's Big Game
The big showdown in the power rankings this week is between Centennial (4th in the power rankings) and Las Cruces (10th). Centennial is backed by a win while Las Cruces is motivated by a recent defeat. Will Centennial repeat its success, or will Las Cruces bounce back and dish team a loss? Check back after their contest Friday for the full scoop.
