Homestead and Fort Wayne Northrop are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2017, but likely not for long. The Spartans will face off against the Bruins at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
While Homestead didn't have the best season last year (they finished 11-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. Everything went their way against Norwell on Friday as they made off with an 11-4 win. The result was nothing new for the Spartans, who have now won four contests by seven runs or more so far this season.
Macy Arnold looked comfortable as she pitched four innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Addi Adams and Olivia Schultheis did most of the damage at the plate: Adams went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one run, while Schultheis went 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. Trinity Rager also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Meanwhile, it was a classic North v. South duel when Fort Wayne Northrop faced off against Fort Wayne South Side on Wednesday. The Bruins' pitcher stepped up to hand the Archers a 12-0 shutout. The Bruins haven't had any issues with the Archers recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive victory against them.
Brilee Day made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. Day was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two runs and two doubles.
In other batting news, Fort Wayne Northrop got a massive performance out of Kamea Sanchez, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with four RBI, one run, and one double. Those four RBI gave Sanchez a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Makenzie Key, who got on base in all three of her plate appearances with three runs and two RBI.
Fort Wayne Northrop was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .533. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Fort Wayne South Side only posted a batting average of .000.
Homestead pushed their record up to 6-2 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Fort Wayne Northrop, their record is now 3-4.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Saturday. Homestead hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.9 home runs per game. However, it's not like Fort Wayne Northrop struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.6 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Homestead couldn't quite finish off Fort Wayne Northrop in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 and fell 5-3. Can the Spartans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
