With a playoff win on the line, Marathon rose to the challenge on Monday. They put the hurt on the Frostproof Bulldogs with a sharp 17-6 win. The result was nothing new for the Dolphins, who have now won ten contests by 11 runs or more so far this season.
Anastasia Boose made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing five innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 11 consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs, two stolen bases, and three RBI. Those four runs gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Maeve Merryman was incredible, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. She has been hot for a while, having posted at least one stolen base the last nine times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Madelyn Thornton, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three RBI and one double.
Marathon always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .649. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Frostproof only posted an OBP of .308.
The victory (which was Marathon's fifth in a row) raised their record to 13-4. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.2 runs over those games. As for Frostproof, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 5-17.
Looking ahead, Marathon will square off against Fort Meade at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Dolphins' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Miners have averaged an impressive 9.2 runs per game this season. Frostproof does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
