Cardinal Newman scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Friday. They were the clear victor by a 70-44 margin over Ben Lippen. For those curious, yes, that was the biggest win Cardinal Newman has managed all season.
Cardinal Newman's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Teonna Draughn, who scored 31 points along with seven assists and six rebounds. That makes it eight consecutive games in which Draughn has scored at least a third of Cardinal Newman's points. Another player making a difference was Zaria Thompson, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 16 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Hammond waltzed into their game on Friday with four straight wins but they left with five. They came out on top against Augusta Christian by a score of 50-37. Given Hammond's advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 25th in South Carolina, while the Lions are ranked 92nd in Georgia), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Cardinal Newman's victory bumped their record up to 6-13. As for Hammond, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 14-4 record this season.
Cardinal Newman was dealt a bruising 61-32 loss at the hands of the Skyhawks in their previous meeting back in January. The contest was all but decided by halftime, at which point Cardinal Newman was down 41-20.
