The Sutton Mustangs were the 29-26 winner over the Centennial Broncos when they last played one another back in January of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. Sutton fell to Centennial 42-38. Sutton has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Sutton lost on Friday despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Payton Reed, who scored 15 points. That's the first time this season that Reed scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Cole Baumert, who scored ten points.
Centennial's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Devin Slawnyk, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 12 rebounds. That makes it five consecutive games in which Slawnyk has scored at least 25% of Centennial's points. Camden Winkleman was another key contributor, scoring 12 points.
Sutton has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-7 record this season. As for Centennial, they pushed their record up to 7-3 with that victory, which was their fifth straight on the road.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sutton and Wood River will face off at 7:45 p.m. on January 9th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Centennial won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Raymond Central at 4:30 p.m. on January 6th. Raymond Central will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Nebraska Rankings (they are ranked 242nd, while Centennial is ranked 61st).
