The Magnolia Blue Eagles are on the road again on Thursday and plays the Wirt County Tigers at 9:30 a.m. on February 8th. Magnolia will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps West Virginia Rankings (they are ranked 483rd, while Wirt County is ranked 74th).
Magnolia pushed their score all the way to 60 on Tuesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. The matchup between them and Clay-Battelle wasn't particularly close, with Magnolia falling 76-60.
Meanwhile, Wirt County blew past Parkersburg Catholic, posting a 72-38 victory on the road. For those curious, yes, that was the biggest win Wirt County has managed all season.
Wirt County found their leader in underclassman Braylan Dawson, who scored 24 points along with four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Dawson has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Aiden Cheuvront, who scored 13 points along with three steals.
Magnolia's loss dropped their record down to 5-9. As for Wirt County, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight matches, which provided a nice bump to their 10-7 record this season.
Magnolia came up short against Wirt County in their previous matchup back in January of 2023, falling 48-44. Can Magnolia avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
