Softball Recap: First Flight Victorious

First Flight won the last time they faced Hertford County and things went their way on Friday too. The Nighthawks' pitcher stepped up to hand the Bears a 16-0 shutout. The Nighthawks might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five matchups by 15 runs or more this season.

Riley Gilreath was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one walk in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring three runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Those three runs gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Savannah Schnader was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That home run was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Madison Adams, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3.

First Flight always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .552. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in four consecutive contests.

First Flight's record now sits at 6-3. As for Hertford County, their loss was their 15th straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-12.

Looking ahead, First Flight will welcome Holmes at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Nighthawks' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Aces have averaged an impressive 9.1 runs per game this season. As for Hertford County, they are taking a road trip to take on North East Carolina Prep at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Husky have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.31 runs per game on average), something the Bears will no doubt try to take advantage of.
