Providence is 8-2 against Mayfield since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Pioneers will host the Cubs at 3:15 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Providence has four straight victories, Mayfield has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Providence is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They blew past Chadwick 23-3 on Friday. Considering the Pioneers have won five contests by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Madelynn Watts was a major factor no matter where she played. She tossed three innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. Watts was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. That stolen base was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Providence got a massive performance out of Delailah Lopez, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, four runs, and four RBI. Another player making a difference was Gloria Galindo, who went 3-for-4 with four runs, three RBI, and one double.
Providence always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .682. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Chadwick only posted an OBP of .286.
Meanwhile, Mayfield came up short against Flintridge Prep on Thursday and fell 11-7.
Jaz Johnson made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one stolen base, and two RBI. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Sarah Salazar, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Providence's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-3. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.0 runs over those games. As for Mayfield, they now have a losing record of 7-8-2.
Tuesday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Providence has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .579. However, it's not like Mayfield struggles in that department as they've averaged .434. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Providence couldn't quite finish off Mayfield when the teams last played two weeks ago and fell 2-0. Will the Pioneers have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other softball content.
