Softball Game Preview: Oakwood Comets vs. Heritage Hawks

Oakwood is a perfect 5-0 against Heritage since April of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Comets will head out on the road to face off against the Hawks at 4:30 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Oakwood has three straight wins, Heritage has 14 straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Oakwood had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt Covington on Tuesday. The Comets were the clear victors by a 12-2 margin over the Trojans.

Caydence Vermillion made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. Vermillion was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Emberlyn Schull was a standout: she went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, two doubles, and one triple. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Bella Bradford was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, three RBI, and one run.

Oakwood always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .622. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Meanwhile, Heritage came up short against Cumberland on Monday, falling 16-1.

Heritage's defeat dropped their record down to 0-11. As for Oakwood, their record now sits at 9-7-1.

Everything went Oakwood's way against Heritage when the teams last played back in April of 2024, as Oakwood made off with a 21-11 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Comets since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
