Liberty is on a three-game streak of home wins, while Palo Verde is on a nine-game streak of away wins (dating back to last season): one of those streaks is about to end. Liberty will host Palo Verde at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Liberty is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.4 runs per game this season.
Liberty is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Nevada's top teams: Arbor View, who was ranked tenth at the time (Liberty was ranked fifth). Liberty came up short against Arbor View on Thursday, falling 16-3. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Liberty saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jaydah Chun, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2.
For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Palo Verde and Shadow Ridge meet (four straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Monday. Palo Verde came out on top in a nail-biter against Shadow Ridge, sneaking past 11-9. The Panthers haven't had any issues with the Mustangs recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.
Haley Kearnes was a major factor no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Taylor Johns was a standout: she scored three runs and stole two bases while going 4-for-5. That's the most hits she has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Halle Law, who went 4-for-5 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run.
Palo Verde was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .525. Their batting average was a full 0 higher than the also-impressive .379 that Shadow Ridge posted.
Liberty's loss dropped their record down to 8-2-2. As for Palo Verde, their victory bumped their record up to 8-0.
Wednesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Liberty hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .341. However, it's not like Palo Verde struggles in that department as they've averaged .448. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Liberty couldn't quite finish off Palo Verde in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 and fell 5-3. Can Liberty avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
