I Section I recap October 29, 2013
Chandler extended the longest winning streak in I Section I this week by beating Basha, 49-7. The win marks fifth in a row for the the Wolves.
Chandler took down the Bears 49-7 last week, the largest margin of any game. Bryce Perkins threw for 180 yards and 3 touchdowns and ran for 91 yards in the win.
Grant Thompson made the biggest impact on defense this week as Highland fell to Hamilton. The 6-foot-3 senior forced 3 fumbles, recorded 1 fumble and racked up 1 sack.
Perkins and Chase Lucas gave Shawn Aguano's team a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Perkins also contributed to the rushing game with 91 yards on the ground.
Basha's Zach Werlinger and Doc O'Connor have formed a dream team this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-2 quarterback Werlinger has thrown for 2,445 yards this season, while O'Connor has 48 catches for 820 yards. Lucas from the Wolves leads the league in rushing with 614 yards.
The most important game in the league this week will be the match up between the Hawks and Chandler. Highland enters the game ranked 18th in the state, while the Wolves ranks third.
Two of the top teams in I Section I will go toe-to-toe this week when Chandler takes on Pete Wahlheim's team. The Wolves' offense has scored 399 points this season, good for No. 1 in the league, while the Hawks have allowed only 155 on the year.
Gilbert made the biggest leap in the national rankings this week, rising to 4,205 from 5,103. The improvement was largely due to a 9-0 victory over Perry last week.
