Lawton dropped their record down to 10-13 on Thursday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins. They fell just short of the Pennfield Panthers by a score of 8-7. The Blue Devils were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Panthers earlier this season, when they won 9-8.
Allison Murphy spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and four unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up nine Ks.
At the plate, Lawton saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Aubri Conklin, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Payton Potter was another, going 1-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
As for Pennfield, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a massive bump to their 5-12 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.3 runs over those games.
On Pennfield's side, Alaina Simmons made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off five hits (and only one walk). Those 11 strikeouts gave Simmons a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, one stolen base, and one run. That stolen base was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Mallorie Miller was incredible, going 2-for-4 with four runs, one triple, and one stolen base. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Madisyn Harris, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Lawton will face off against Decatur at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Pennfield, they will host Union City at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
