Softball Recap: Johnston City's Winning Streak Snapped at Eight Games

Johnston City dropped their record down to 16-10 on Monday, which also ended the team's eight-game streak of wins. They fell just short of the Herrin Tigers by a score of 11-10. The Indians were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Tigers apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in March of 2024.

Peyton Johnson put in work no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out seven over 4.1 innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run and three RBI.

In other batting news, Lilli Armes made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. She is on a roll when it comes to RBI, as she's now brought in three or more in each of the last three games she's played. Makenzie Mowery was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

As for Herrin, their victory ended a five-game drought at home and bumped them up to 12-16. With that win, they brought their scoring average up to 6.2 runs per game.

On Herrin's side, they let Reese Elliott and Gigi George run wild. Elliott got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases and one run, while George went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most runs George has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Branson Hill, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Johnston City wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, a 10-0 victory against Frankfort on the 21st. As for Herrin, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next match, a 2-1 defeat against Freeburg on the 20th.
