Johnson Central (Paintsville, Ky.) took the final lead of the game on Saturday as it ran in a two-point conversion with 11:00 to go, bringing the team to victory over
Ashland Blazer (Ashland, Ky.) 22-21.
After taking the lead on a
Malik Massey touchdown run, the Tomcats went into halftime with a 7-6 lead. The Golden Eagles took the lead for good with a two-point conversion in the fifth quarter.
Despite scoring zero points in the third, Johnson Central still trailed by 8 points going into the fourth quarter. But eight points in the fourth helped JC pull out the victory.
The loss came as a surprise for Ashland Blazer, which entered the game ranked No. 21 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for Kentucky, while the Paintsville school was ranked No. 25. AB came into the game having won one of the past eight games between the two teams.
Massey made a difference for the Ashland school. The senior wide receiver ran for one touchdown.
The Golden Eagles got revenge for last year's 22-6 loss to the Tomcats with the victory.
The defeat comes as a step back for Ashland Blazer, which notched a 56-8 victory over Greenup County in its previous outing.
In its next matchup Johnson Central (8-1) will take on Belfry in a non-conference game. The Pirates will bring a record of 6-2 into the meeting.
