Even though the Mahnomen/Waubun Thunderbirds scored an imposing 85 points on Monday, the Red Lake Warriors still came out on top. Red Lake took down Mahnomen/Waubun 102-85. Given Red Lake's advantage in MaxPreps' Minnesota basketball rankings (they are ranked 115th, while Mahnomen/Waubun is ranked 338th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading Red Lake to victory were Gerald Kingbird jr and Jack Brown. Kingbird jr dropped a double-double on 28 points and ten assists, while Brown went 12 for 23 from beyond the arc en route to 45 points and 3 assists. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Brown has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Tyrone Beaulieu Jr, who scored 13 points along with two steals.
Red Lake pushed their record up to 9-3 with that win, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 101.2 points per game. As for Mahnomen/Waubun, they are on a seven-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-11.
Red Lake on the road again on Tuesday and play against Deer River at 7:15 p.m. on January 16th. Deer River knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past 13 matchups -- so hopefully Red Lake likes a good challenge. As for Mahnomen/Waubun, they will play host again and welcome Win-E-Mac, where tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Win-E-Mac's favor is that they have posted big point totals every time they've taken the court this season.
