If The Washington Huskies were feeling good off their 55-2 takedown of the Encinal Jets last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Washington took a hard 34-20 fall against Hayward on Friday. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Washington in their matchups with Hayward: they've now lost four in a row.
When it comes to explaining why Washington lost, one person who can't be blamed is Esean Johnson. Despite the final result, he rushed for 170 yards and two touchdowns on only eight carries. Johnson really tore up the turf during one magnificent 71-yard run. Cameron Redd was another key contributor, rushing for 66 yards and a touchdown on only five carries.
Hayward can attribute much of their success to Kennedy Braziel, who rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown on only six carries, and also threw for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Mateaki Paongo and his 117 yards on the ground were also a key factor in Hayward's win.
Washington's defeat was their fifth straight on the road (dating back to last season), which bumped their record down to 5-5. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 7-4 Moreau Catholic and 7-4 Berkeley (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 61.5% over those games). As for Hayward, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 7-3 record this season.
Washington does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Hayward also has no future games currently scheduled.
