Softball Recap: Seeger Comes Up Short

Seeger fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Covington on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Trojans by a score of 10-8. The Patriots were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Trojans earlier this season, when they won 8-6.

Zoe Thomas was huge no matter where she played even without the win. On the mound, she struck out 14 batters over 6.1 innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Vivienne Middleton and Lainie Serie stepped up to the plate in a big way. Middleton went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Serie went 3-for-5 with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. Serie continues to improve, besting her previous run total in each of the last three games she's played.

Seeger has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 12-10 record this season. That patch can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.8 runs over those games. As for Covington, their victory bumped their record up to 13-9.

Coming up, Seeger is taking a road trip to take on Crawfordsville at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The Athenians have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 13.76 runs per game on average), something the Patriots will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Covington, they will welcome South Vermillion at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Wildcats have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.94 runs per game on average), something the Trojans will no doubt try to take advantage of.
