The Waverly Vikings are taking a road trip to take on the Pius X Thunderbolts at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Waverly will come into the game with an undefeated record on the line.
Waverly is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Nebraska's top teams: Norris, who was ranked eighth at the time (Waverly was ranked third). The Vikings sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 45-42 victory over the Titans on Friday. Waverly's win was all the more impressive since the Titans were averaging only 12.13 points allowed on the season.

It was another big night for Nathan Axmann, who rushed for 211 yards and three TDs while picking up 7.5 yards per carry, and also picked up 140 receiving yards and one score. He really caught the secondary sleeping when he pulled down a catch that went for 79 yards. Brockston Teply was another key player, having thrown for 374 yards and three touchdowns.
Waverly didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Norris to a completion percentage of just 50%. The Vikings hasn't an opponent to post a completion percentage of 0.57 or higher in six consecutive contests.
Waverly didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Gavin McMillan.
Meanwhile, Pius X was able to grind out a solid victory over Beatrice on Friday, taking the game 20-10. That ten point margin sets a new team best for the Thunderbolts this season.
Waverly's win bumped their record up to 8-0. As for Pius X, the victory got them back to even at 4-4.
Friday's matchup might be decided in the trenches. Waverly has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 186.1 rushing yards per game. It's a different story for Pius X, though, as they've been averaging only 59.5 rushing yards. How will they fare against such a dominant running game?
Waverly didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Pius X when the teams last played back in October of 2024, but they still walked away with a 31-27 win. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was the Thunderbolts' Joseph Andreasen, who rushed for 112 yards and one touchdown, and also caught one score. Now that he won't be playing on Friday, will it be easier for the Vikings to walk away with another win? There's only one way to find out.
