Coronado and Montwood are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2021, but likely not for long. The Thunderbirds are taking a road trip to square off against the Rams at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The last three games Coronado has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
Coronado is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering Pebble Hills just ended the team's six-game winning streak on Tuesday. They fell just short of the Spartans by a score of 4-3.
Sebastian Rodriguez was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out eight batters over 6.1 innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits (and not a single walk). He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up a single walk any time he's pitched this season.
At the plate, Coronado saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was A.J. Rivas, who went 1-for-2 with one run and one double.
Meanwhile, Montwood didn't have quite enough to beat Pebble Hills on Saturday and fell 2-1. The Rams haven't had much luck with the Spartans recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.
Montwood handed starting duties to Matt Saenz, who gave a strong showing despite the result: he tossed five innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. That's the fewest earned runs Saenz has allowed over his last two contests. Jorge Rodriguez relieved him and did a solid job, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.
Coronado's defeat was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 13-4. As for Montwood, their record now sits at 5-12-1.
Montwood's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Coronado hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .330. It's a different story for Montwood, though, as they've only averaged .230. Will they be able to contain Coronado's hitters?
Coronado got the 'W' when the teams last played back in April of 2025 against Montwood by a conclusive 14-2 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Thunderbirds since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
