Even though the Bruton Panthers have not done well against the New Kent Trojans recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. Bruton snuck past New Kent with a 65-59 win. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Leading Bruton to victory were Khamani Phillips and Brandon Freeman. Phillips scored 15 points along with five assists and three steals, while Freeman scored 12 points along with seven assists and six rebounds. Freeman hasn't dropped below two steals for eight straight games. Kareem Davis was another key contributor, scoring 12 points.
Several Trojans players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Dillon Mickles, who scored ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Will Ross, who scored nine points along with two steals.
Bruton is on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 12 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 12-4 record this season. As for New Kent, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 12-4.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Bruton won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Tabb at 7:00 p.m. on January 25th. Tabb is coming into the contest on a six-game losing streak. New Kent on the road again on Friday and play against Grafton at 7:00 p.m. on January 26th. Grafton will be looking to keep their seven-game home win streak alive.
