Football Recap: Cam Green Leads Mcminn County's Defense on Friday

McMinn County had lost three straight, but after bumping their record up to 6-4 on Friday that streak is in the rearview. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the East Hamilton Hurricanes 50-48. The win almost wasn't to be: the Cherokees were down 42-28 in the third quarter.

Lincoln Watson had an outrageously good game as he rushed for 268 yards and six TDs. Those 268 rushing yards gave him a new career-high.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: McMinn County was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 311 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.

On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to McMinn County's defensive line and their five sacks. Cam Green was especially locked on to East Hamilton's QB and sacked him twice. Green is becoming a predictor of McMinn County's success: when he posts at least one sack the team is 5-1 (and 1-3 when he doesn't).

As for East Hamilton, their defeat ended a five-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 8-2. They were up 42-28 in the third quarter but couldn't hold on to the lead.

East Hamilton lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Wyatt Miller, who threw for 407 yards and five touchdowns while picking up 16.3 yards per attempt, and also punched in a pair of scores on the ground. Jaden Haywood was another key player, picking up 194 receiving yards and a pair of TDs.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. McMinn County will square off against Lincoln County at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 857 yards in their previous games. As for East Hamilton, they will take on Columbia Central at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Hurricanes' defense better be ready for this one: the Lions have averaged an impressive 31 points per game this season.
