Baseball Game Preview: Northridge Vikings vs. Mt. Vernon Yellowjackets

For the first time this season, Northridge will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. They will look to defend their home field on Wednesday against the Mt. Vernon Yellowjackets at 5:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Northridge has three straight victories, Mt. Vernon has three straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Northridge barely beat Tree of Life Christian the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Vikings blew past the Trojans 14-6 on Tuesday. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Collin Matheson was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3. Matheson is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: he's snagged at least one every time he's taken the field this season. Sawyer Miller was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-2.

Northridge was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .423. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Tree of Life Christian only posted a batting average of .238.

Meanwhile, Mt. Vernon didn't have quite enough to beat Licking Valley on Monday and fell 2-1.

Mt. Vernon saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kayden Packard, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

Mt. Vernon's loss dropped their record down to 1-3. As for Northridge, their win bumped their record up to 3-0.

Mt. Vernon's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Northridge has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9 hits per game. It's a different story for Mt. Vernon, though, as they've been averaging 8.8 hits. Given Northridge's sizable advantage in that area, the Yellowjackets will need to find a way to close that gap.
