Evansville North and New Albany are an even 4-4 against one another since May of 2015, but likely not for long. The Huskies will head out on the road to challenge the Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
Evansville North fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Evansville Mater Dei on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Wildcats by a score of 2-1. Having soared to a lofty 14 runs in the game before, the Huskies couldn't push the score so high this time.
Evansville North got a good showing from Braden Perry, who didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over four innings pitched. What's more, Perry gave up only zero earned runs, the fewest he's had since back in March.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for New Albany, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Saturday. They blew past Borden 11-2 on Wednesday. The victory was some much needed relief for the Bulldogs as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
Camden Kiper looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out seven over four innings pitched. New Albany is 2-1 when Kiper allows two or fewer hits, but 4-5 otherwise.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Tyler Hubbard, who fired off two home runs while going 2-for-3. Those two home runs gave him a new career-high. Landon Gum also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
New Albany was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
The win got New Albany back to even at 6-6. As for Evansville North, with the defeat, they broke their four-game winning streak and moved their record to 10-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Evansville North has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like New Albany struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 6.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Evansville North skirted past New Albany 3-1 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Huskies since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
