Bourgade Catholic and Northwest Christian are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2019, but likely not for long. The Golden Eagles will square off against the Crusaders at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Bourgade Catholic is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.2 runs per game this season.
Bourgade Catholic is probably headed into the game with a chip on their shoulder considering Payson just ended the team's three-game winning streak on Monday. They fell just short of the Longhorns by a score of 6-5.
Olivia Durazo spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered six runs (all of which were unearned) on seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Samantha Santillan made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs while going 4-for-4. Another player making a difference was Esther Quezada, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, Northwest Christian waltzed into their matchup on Monday with five straight wins... but they left with six. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Knights a 15-0 shutout. Considering the Crusaders have won ten contests by more than eight runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Caylie Thomas was a major factor no matter where she played. She pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Thomas was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3.
In other pitching news, Katie Gillette looked comfortable as she tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.
Back at the plate, Kinsey Unger and Mia Angus did most of the damage at the plate: Unger scored three runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-3, while Angus went 2-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. That's the most runs Angus has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Kendalyn Cook, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-3.
Northwest Christian was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .483. They are a perfect 10-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Northwest Christian pushed their record up to 13-4 with the victory, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.3 runs over those games. As for Bourgade Catholic, their defeat was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 6-1 and their overall record down to 17-8.
Tuesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Bourgade Catholic hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .388. However, it's not like Northwest Christian struggles in that department as they've averaged .438. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Bourgade Catholic's way against Northwest Christian in their previous meeting back in March, as Bourgade Catholic made off with a 14-3 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Golden Eagles since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
