Newcomb is 0-10 against Tohatchi since February of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Newcomb Skyhawks on the road again and play against the Tohatchi Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on January 24th. Hopefully Newcomb focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 24 on Saturday.
Last Saturday, Newcomb was just a bucket shy of victory and fell 50-49 to Wingate.
Lethia Yazzie put forth a good effort for the losing side as she scored 32 points along with nine steals and two blocks. As a matter of fact, that's the most points she has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Nevaeh Miller, who scored four points along with eight rebounds and four steals.
Meanwhile, Tohatchi had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.5 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Saturday. They enjoyed a cozy 62-43 victory over Thoreau. Given Tohatchi's advantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked 17th, while Thoreau is ranked 83rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Newcomb bumped their record down to 8-8 with that defeat, which was their third straight on the road. As for Tohatchi, their win bumped their record up to 13-4.
Newcomb was taken down by Tohatchi 59-32 in their previous matchup back in February of 2023. Can Newcomb avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
