The Greenwood Eagles entered their tilt with the Greenville Red Raiders with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. Greenwood took down Greenville 47-31 on Monday. Given Greenwood's advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 18th, while Greenville is ranked 84th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Greenwood to victory, but perhaps none more so than Danielle Oliver, who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine rebounds. Oliver is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 20 games she's played. Another player making a difference was Ty Johnson, who scored 16 points along with three blocks.
When it comes to explaining why Greenville lost, one person who can't be blamed is Kayla Gaston. Despite the final result, she scored 16 points along with seven rebounds. That was a full 51.6% of Greenville's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Chloe Briggs, who scored nine points along with six rebounds.
Greenwood's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 20-4. As for Greenville, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 9-14.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Greenwood won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Westside at 6:00 p.m. on February 6th. Westside will roll in looking for their 11th straight victory, something Greenwood surely won't give up without a fight. As for Greenville, they won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Pickens at 6:00 p.m. on February 6th. Hopefully Pickens focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 23 last Friday.
