Des Moines can now show off nine landslide victories after their most recent contest on Thursday. They blew past Springer 77-47 on the road. Given Des Moines' advantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked 27th, while Springer is ranked 102nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Des Moines' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Caleb Sumpter led the charge by scoring 22 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. Sumpter has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last six times he's played. Another player making a difference was Destry Sumpter, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Cimarron didn't have too much trouble with Springer on the road on Saturday as they won 61-42.
Des Moines' win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 18-3. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 66.4 points per game. As for Cimarron, their win bumped their record up to 17-4.
Des Moines beat Cimarron 70-59 in their previous meeting last Thursday. The rematch might be a little tougher for Des Moines since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
