The Bishop Verot Vikings have been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They fell just short of Riverside by a score of 52-50. While losing is never fun, Bishop Verot can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 104th in Florida, while Riverside is ranked second in South Carolina).
Leroy Roker and Jerry Ashley certainly did their best on Saturday to try and avoid the loss. Roker scored 20 points along with six rebounds, while Ashley dropped a double-double on 13 points and 15 rebounds. Roker scored a full 40% of Bishop Verot's points, the sixth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Gavin Williams was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Bishop Verot's defeat dropped their record down to 9-3. As for Riverside, the win (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 12-1.
Bishop Verot will head out on the road to face off against Cathedral Prep at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Cathedral Prep is on a three-game streak of home wins, Bishop Verot a three-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court. Riverside will take on Gaffney at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Gaffney is coming into the contest on a three-game losing streak.
