The South Portland Red Riots will head out on the road to challenge the Thornton Academy Trojans at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. South Portland is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.8 runs per game this season.
South Portland took a loss when they played away from home on Wednesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Thursday. They blew past Massabesic 10-0. Considering the Red Riots have won three matches by more than nine runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Maegan Berry made a splash while hitting and pitching. She kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs and one double. Those four hits gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Rachel DiMauro, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one double. Those three hits gave her a new career-high. Sadie Soucy was another key player, going 2-for-4 with five RBI, one run, and one double.
South Portland was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .500. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .387 or higher in four consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Thornton Academy lost 12-1 to Windham on Friday. The Trojans have struggled against the Eagles recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost meeting.
Thornton Academy saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Tess Frager, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one run and one double.
South Portland is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 3-6 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. As for Thornton Academy, their loss dropped their record down to 2-5.
Everything went South Portland's way against Thornton Academy in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as South Portland made off with a 13-4 victory. Will the Red Riots repeat their success, or do the Trojans have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
