Juan Diego Catholic is a perfect 7-0 against American Leadership Academy since April of 2022 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Soaring Eagle will host the Eagles at 3:30 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Juan Diego Catholic has three straight victories, American Leadership Academy has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Juan Diego Catholic is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They were the clear victors by a 24-1 margin over Summit Academy on Thursday. Considering the Soaring Eagle have won nine matchups by more than ten runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Sienna Wood made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit (and not a single walk). Wood was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBI, and one double. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, Juan Diego Catholic got a massive performance out of Avie Hernandez, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple. That's the most RBI Hernandez has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Mattie Montoya, who went 3-for-5 with four runs, two stolen bases, and three RBI.
Juan Diego Catholic hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least five batters in 13 consecutive games.
Meanwhile, American Leadership Academy suffered their closest defeat since April 19, 2024 on Monday. They fell just short of Park City by a score of 18-16.
Jackie Huff and Ryan Hiss did some serious damage despite the final result: Huff went 3-for-4 with five stolen bases, three runs, and two doubles, while Hiss got on base in six of her seven plate appearances with four stolen bases, four runs, and one double. That double marked the first that Hiss has hit this season. Karyssa Johnson was another key player, going 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double.
Juan Diego Catholic's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-7. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 17.7 runs over those games. As for American Leadership Academy, their loss dropped their record down to 6-11.
American Leadership Academy's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Juan Diego Catholic has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 11.4 hits per game. It's a different story for American Leadership Academy, though, as they've been averaging 11.9 hits. Given Juan Diego Catholic's sizable advantage in that area, the Eagles will need to find a way to close that gap.
Juan Diego Catholic took their win against American Leadership Academy when the teams last played on April 10th by a conclusive 20-1 score. Do the Soaring Eagle have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Eagles turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
