The Commonwealth Mermaids couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They were dealt a 68-37 loss at the hands of Marie Philip on Monday. Commonwealth lost against Marie Philip in their previous head to head back in February, too, but the margin this time around was much wider than the 52-28 score last time.
Leading Marie Philip to victory were Jeremy Novas and Xavier DeLeon. Novas dropped a double-double on 20 points and 19 rebounds, while DeLeon dropped a double-double on 27 points and 17 rebounds. That makes it three consecutive games in which Novas has scored at least 25% of Marie Philip's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Henry Wentworth, who scored 10 points along with 8 rebounds.
Commonwealth's defeat dropped their record down to 0-1. As for Marie Philip, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 3-0.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Commonwealth will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Covenant Christian Academy at 3:30 p.m. on January 8, 2024. As for Marie Philip, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Katzenbach School for the Deaf at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
