Northeast Jones and Greene County are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2015, but likely not for long. The Tigers will welcome the Wildcats at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Northeast Jones' pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Thursday. They blew past Quitman 19-0. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Tigers.
Kylinn Vice made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out nine over four innings pitched. Vice was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Hannah Harrison and Madison Evans did most of the damage at the plate: Harrison scored two runs while going 1-for-2, while Evans scored four runs while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances. Evans continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Cheerae Jones was another key player, scoring three runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Greene County won against Northeast Jones on Friday with 11 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Tuesday. The Wildcats put the hurt on Moss Point with a sharp 11-1 victory. The win was familiar territory for the Wildcats, who have now won three games in a row.
Like Northeast Jones, Greene County also got a great game from a two-way player: Addie Tungett. On the mound, she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 13 over six innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts Tungett has posted since back in February. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.
In other batting news, Erin Meadows was incredible, going 2-for-4 with two triples, four RBI, and one run. Those two triples gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Shanna Johnson, who scored a run while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances.
Greene County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .615. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .514 or higher in three consecutive contests.
Northeast Jones' victory bumped their record up to 18-4-1. As for Greene County, their win bumped their record up to 17-7.
Friday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Northeast Jones hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .402. However, it's not like Greene County struggles in that department as they've averaged .330. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
