The Wilber-Clatonia Wolverines fought the good fight in their overtime game against the Sandy Creek Cougars on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 48-40 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Cougars. Wilber-Clatonia was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cougars apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2023.
Sandy Creek's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Ryleigh Skalka led the charge by scoring 18 points along with seven rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Skalka has scored all season. Emma Fisher was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with three steals.
Wilber-Clatonia has not been sharp recently as the team's lost four of their last five matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-14 record this season. As for Sandy Creek, their win bumped their record up to an identical 4-14.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Wilber-Clatonia is on the road again on Tuesday and plays the Mustangs at 6:00 p.m. on February 6th. As for Sandy Creek, they will square off against the Panthers on Tuesday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are closely ranked in Nebraska (Fillmore Central is ranked 213th, while the Cougars are ranked 223rd).
