Basketball Game Preview: Madison Mavericks vs. SA Roosevelt Rough Riders

The Madison Mavericks will head out on the road to square off against the SA Roosevelt Rough Riders at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both have had a bumpy ride up to this point with 11 consecutive losses for Madison and six for SA Roosevelt.

It's never fun to lose, and it's even less fun to lose 64-28, which was the final score in Madison's tilt against LEE on Wednesday. While losing is never fun, the Mavericks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 918th, while the Volunteers are ranked 323rd).

Madison's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Tatyanna Gunn, who posted seven points, and Sophia Alejandro, who had six points and five boards. Those seven points gave Gunn a new career-high. Alejandra Hernandez also deserves some recognition as she posted her first block of the season.

Meanwhile, SA Roosevelt lost to Brandeis on the road by a 39-24 margin on Wednesday.

Madison will have to contain Maddie Castillo as she made an impact in SA Roosevelt's last game. She put up 13 points and seven rebounds. That was a full 54.2% of SA Roosevelt's points, marking the eighth time in a row she's scored more than a third of the team's points.

Madison's record is now 4-22. As for SA Roosevelt, their record now sits at 6-18.

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Madison has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 33 boards per game. However, it's not like SA Roosevelt struggles in that department as they've been averaging 22.4 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.

Madison came up short against SA Roosevelt in their previous meeting back in December of 2024, falling 28-20. Can Madison avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
