The Midd-West Mustangs will head out to square off against the Mount Carmel Tornadoes at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The teams are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Midd-West has struggled recently with three losses in a row, while Mount Carmel will arrive with four straight victories.
Midd-West is headed into the game having just suffered their biggest defeat since March 26th on Friday. They lost 8-1 to South Williamsport.
Midd-West saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Colton Aumiller, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one double. Connor Riches also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, while Mount Carmel put up plenty of runs on Saturday, the same can't be said for Berwick. The Tornadoes were the clear victors by a 13-0 margin over the Bulldogs. Considering the Tornadoes have won 11 contests by more than six runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
Aidan Brokenshire made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out 13 over five innings pitched. Those 13 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one triple and one RBI.
In other batting news, Gabe Yuskoski was incredible, going 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. Another player making a difference was Logan Pizzoli, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs and one double.
Mount Carmel kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in four consecutive matchups.
Mount Carmel's record now sits at 14-1. As for Midd-West, their loss dropped their record down to 6-9.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Midd-West has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Mount Carmel struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Midd-West couldn't quite finish off Mount Carmel in their previous meeting back in April and fell 6-4. Can the Mustangs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
