II Section I recap Oct. 23, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to La Joya Community, who took down 143rd ranked La Joya Community, 44-42.
Chavez extended the longest winning streak in II Section I this week by beating Sierra Linda, 69-0. The victory was the ninth in a row for the team.
Lamont Williams made the biggest impact on defense this week as Ironwood beat Deer Valley. The 5-foot-11 senior racked up one sack.
Antonio Zepeda was the best wideout in the league this week as Camelback lost to Shadow Mountain. Zepeda racked up three receptions for 124 yards. Antuan Woods helped Camelback's passing attack out by catching one ball for eight yards.
Deryn McGee was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 320 yards on 29 carries as the Fighting Lobos fell to the Matadors. Kevin Ford also contributed to the rushing game with 65 yards on the ground.
Jordan Gungl put up the best numbers through the air as Apollo defeated Fairfax. He finished with 10 completions for 241 yards and four touchdowns. Gungl's favorite target this week was Abe Mendivil, who caught five passes for 88 yards.
6-foot-2 quarterback Arturo Macias of Chavez is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1796. He has also thrown 24 touchdowns. On the ground, the Eagles' Jett Robertson has rushed for 1439 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Justin Bishop. The Apollo star has 32 catches for 639 yards.
Kellis's Blaine Freeman needs only 26 yards against the Hawks next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 126 carries Freeman has accumulated 974 yard this year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Ironwood takes on Centennial. Ian Curtis' team is currently in fifth, while the Coyotes are in second.
The Eagles were the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from eighth to fifth in the league. Ironwood vanquished the Skyhawks 37-29 earlier in the week.
