Baseball Recap: Granite City Takes a Loss

Granite City extended their losing streak to six on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 5-15 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 2-1 heartbreaker at the hands of the Althoff Catholic Crusaders. The Warriors were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Crusaders apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

Connor Schaefer was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Granite City saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Evan Brewer, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base. That stolen base marked the first that Brewer has snagged this season.

As for Althoff Catholic, their record is now 15-13. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted since April 15th.

On Althoff Catholic's side, Josh McPherson looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. What's more, McPherson posted two strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Ben Vosse, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run. Althoff Catholic is undefeated when Vosse posts two or more stolen bases, but 10-13 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Tyler Pollock, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Granite City will face off against Carbondale at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Althoff Catholic, they will take on Nashville at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
